Problems insalling Wine-20040121.tar.gz.

In my limit experience with linux I have never been able to extract and install a working program from a xxxxxx.tar.gz file, but in another example of hope over experience I decided to try once more with 'Wine-20040121.tar.gz.' After extracting the files I followed the instruction in the README file. The compilation seemed to be proceeding properly until it ended with the statement:

"The installed Wine libraries will not be found!
You can either:
Add the line '/usr/local/lib' to /etc/ld.so.conf and run /sbin/ldconfig
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib"

Normally I would expect any statement of either would be followed by an "or" clause giving two choices, but the person who wrote this obviously didn't see it that way. Nevertheless I followed the instructions as given, inserted the line '/usr/local/lib in /etc/ld.so.conf' and ran, '/sbin/ldconfig export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib.'
I then received the message, '/sbin/ldconfig: :/usr/local/lib is not a known library type.'

I would appreciate it if someone could tell me if there is any way to satisfy this program and get it to work.

The two choices are there, either

Choice 1:Put /usr/local/lib in /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig one more time.
Choice 2:export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib
# Run the above command each time you boot.

<edit>BTW in your post the last " is not part of the command.

The installed Wine libraries will not be found!
You can either:
Add the line '/usr/local/lib' to /etc/ld.so.conf and run /sbin/ldconfig
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib

This was my error and the above may explain how to fix it but if you could put it in nOOb terms that would be great.

open the file /etc/ld.so.conf with a text editer, then add the line /usr/local/lib to the file. After doing so , run the command
/sbin/ldconfig

Just make the file. The only thing in it would be one line like this:
/usr/local/lib
Then run ldconfig as root.

The other choice as mentioned above would be to put the command:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib
In one of your startup scripts, like /etc/profile.
