Problems getting Firefox download unpacked and installed

Hi, having downloaded firefox and being a relative newbie to Linux. I would like to find out the correct command sequence that I need to
1. Extract/unpack the tar file
2. Do I need Gunzip if it's a tar.gz file?
Hope someone can help, many thanks.

Take a look below. This demonstrates how to extract the source code, then use make to compile it.
