problems extracting php-4.3.10.tar.gz


when i try to open the tarball php-4.3.10.tar.gz using : tar -zxf php-4.3.10.tar.gz
i get the message :
tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

any idea??

Sounds like you might have a corrupt archive there. What happens if you unzip and untar in two seperate stages, i.e.

gunzip php-4.3.10.tar.gz

tar -xf php-4.3.10.tar

You could try re-downloading the file (I'm assuming this is how you got it the first time).

still same problem

i downloaded the file again - same problem
i tried it on a previous version php-4.3.9.tar.gz - same problem

when usint the two stages way the gunzip went ok but the tar command gave me the same message (this does not look like a tar archive....)

OK, that seems odd. If you have access to KDE or Gnome, then can you open the file in a GUI archiving program? Also, can you post the full URL you got each file from. I'll see if I have any problems with either.

php-4.3.10 tar problem solved

ok.
downloaded the file from a different server - tar works fine now.

That's good then. You might want to let an admin for the original server know that you had problems, and hopefully they'll be able to sort it out.
