problems compiling openmotif, was someone able to?

Hi, I want to install KDE 3.2 from source. It is recomended that you install openmotif so that konqueror can use mozilla plugins. But I seem to have some trouble compiling openmotif.
My first questions is that, do I need to install openmotif, or can you do with lesstif.
To make a long story short, i'm getting compilation error's that look like the source code has some sementical error's. I was able to resolve some of the problems by manually editing a source file (I just commented out something, no big deal). The compilation goes futher after that, but gets stuck someware else.
I'm being vague, I know. But if someone has installed openmotif, maby he/she could tell me how they did it.
I think this issue is the version of gcc i'm using. The motif source code seems to be pretty old. I can't get a newer version, I woulden't be surprised if there wasn't one around. I'm using gcc 3.2.3. I get most of the stuff compiled, but there is a library called "libuil" that doesn't seem to compile. Also, how do I compile that static libraries? I see that the shared objects get compiled and are usable. (I know that because I downloaded the source of a simple motif program and I could compile, link and run it). To summerize:

- do I really need openmotif, or can I do with lesstif which is easier to install
- how do I get every thing to compile using gcc 3.2.3 and the latest glibc?
- how do I get the static libraries to compile?

Again if someone has installed openmotif them selfs, I would apriciated if they could give my some pointers.

ps: don't tell me to install the precompiled binaries: I spend an entire week (re)installing LFS and I really whish to install as much as possible from source.
