Problems adding icons to Gnome in Ubuntu 7.10

Hi guys & gals,

Seeing all those customised Linux desktops ou there on the internet I got inspired I went to gnome-look.org to download an icon theme.

Here's the problem: when going to System->Preferences->Appearance->Theme->Customized Theme->Icons there is no Install button for my icon theme.

So how do I add an icon theme without installing some app or a complete theme?

I googled and the Gentoo wiki told me to put the icon folder uncompressed in /usr/share/icons . Now I need to edit some .gtkrc.mine file (located in ~/) but the file is not there. Mind you that I use Ubuntu and not Gentoo but that guide should be universal right?

So how do I do it?

.gtcrc.mine

first off, i want to make sure you know that the file you are looking for is hidden. if you are using a terminal, make sure you are using 'ls -a', or if you are using the gui file manager, go to View > Show Hidden Files and see if the file is there.

If you already knew that, and it still isnt there, then create the file.

I know some basic command stuff like this (cd, ls [-a], rm, rmdir, mkdir, pwd) and some file knowledge as well as some basic file hierarchy understanding.

Yes I could be creating the file but if it exists and it gets read with only one simple line I wrote am I not going to fsck up some part of Ubuntu?

gnome theme

i found this article:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/...cons_and_fonts

if you go to the section "Downloading from the GNOME Art Web Site" it tells you how to install theme components. apparently you just go into System -> Preferences -> Theme, instead of into the customized theme. Perhaps the 'customized theme' is only listing the icons that are already installed... Once you are there, see if there is an install button, if so click on it and install your icon theme.

@neophytezer0: there is no Theme in Preferences. The problem is that Ubuntu 7.10 has only one option called Appearence and in it it all works different. You have Compiz-Fusion stuff in here as well. Not really one tool for one job... So I thought I do it the command-line way but... Because it has some themes there I figured that it allready reads from another file so i am a litle afraid of creating a new one somehere else
