Problem with xawtv - no /dev/video0

Hi, I have installed the xawtv package on my Slack 8.1 box with a Hauppage tv card. The kernel is compiled for bttv as module. When I try to run it i get:

This is xawtv-3.85, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.20-smp-7-3-2003)
can't open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
no video grabber device available

Running v4l-conf gives:

v4l-conf: using X11 display :0
dga: version 2.0
mode: 1024x768, depth=16, bpp=16, bpl=2048, base=0xfe000000
can't open /dev/video0: No such file or directory

The bttv module is loading ok. Obviously, I do not have a video0 device in /dev Should I be substituting something else foe video0?

Any help appreciated.

Kevin.
