Your problem is that instead of sharing your current Debian desktop, you've created a new, empty one, and shared that. That's basically how TightVNC works; it creates a sort of virtual desktop that you can connect to and run programs on.

To make things a lot more useful, you should probably have tightVNC automatically start up your favorite window manager, or maybe just a terminal, by adding it to the script ~/.vnc/xstartup

For example, my xstartup file looks like this:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
That replaces the annoying black and white dot pattern with a saner grey color, and gives me a terminal I can run programs(such as a window manager) from.

HOWEVER, if all you really ever wanted to do was remote control your Debian desktop, I'd recommend that instead of using TightVNC, you use this:
http://freshmeat.net/projects/x11vnc...ease_id=182562
which does exactly that.

tightvnc is ok(i used it for a few moths), but I like RealVnc. It was the origional VNC project, and It does everything tightvnc does as well as the fact that it has a nice feature - a web client. You can log in and use your desktop from any computer on the internet with a Java Enabled browser, you just type in your ip/domain + the port number you set it to run on. I also found it easier to configure, but that might just be because I installed tight with apt-get and it put things in wierd places whereas I installed RealVnc myself. Anyway, RealVnc, just go with it. Has served me faithfully for 2 years(even from 300MHz crappy school computers)

A web client? Cool I recall seeing some company sell a similar product as a subscription service some time ago...I really think a lot more people would use VNC if they knew about it.
