Angry Problem with sound - but I think it is my fault.

I am sure I am doing something wrong here, but here goes:

I want to install sound support in Linux. So I check /proc/pci, and find this (relating to sound):

BUS 0, device 18, function 0:
Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] (rev 2).
IRQ 9
I/O at 0x1080 [0x10bf]

So I then tried running:

modprobe es1371

I then get an error about 5 lines long saying something like no such device, and how insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including IO and IRQ parameters.

Can anyone help me through this? I am not sure what to do from here.

Try running "sndconfig", you may have to install it from your cd first and you will have to be root to run it.

Hi,

This is maybe of some use to you, module for Ensoniq ES1371 is snd-ens1371, not ens1371.

Try: modprobe snd-ens1371

Good luck.

sndconfig is an older tool to detect soundcards with OSS. alsaconfig prepares your modules.conf/modprobe.conf for use with ALSA. i don't know what tools new distros use, except maybe redhat-config-soundcard for OSS.
