Problem with RhythmBox and Ubuntu

I installed Ubuntu last night and am playing around with it. I have a FAT32 drive with all of my data that I have been using with Window. I can access that drive fine. When I launch RhythmBox and try to play one of my mp3's, I get an error telling me that the file is not an audio stream.

All 9GB of my music have been created using iTunes for Windows. I like the way iTunes displays my music and handles the playlists. I read that RhythmBox is similar. I would like to use RhythmBox, but don't know why it is not working.

Any help is appreciated. Also, is it possible to import music and playlists from my iTunes foler?

TIA,
Mike

Ubuntu, and many distros, will not play mp3s out of the box. You have to install the plugins.

Activate the extra repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list then fire up synaptic and have a look at what is available for you.

Hey

Once you've gotten your extra repositories set up, use synaptic or apt-get and install w32codecs. That should help you meet your mp3 needs (and other media types).

Cheers,
Ben

Thanks for the replies. I got the extra repositories and got mp3 files working. Now I am trying to get the m4p files (AAC) that I have from iTunes to open. It seems that it is a desirable request. Others have posted the same problems I have. At least I can listen to my music now.
