Unhappy problem with pam_ldap and ssha

hello folks!

i have an annoying problem with pam_ldap authenticating against my ldap server.
the actual problem ist, that if some user tries to log in it fails if the userpassword stored in the ldap directory is not crypt.
i've set "pam_password exop" in /etc/ldap.conf and "password_hash {SSHA}" in /etc/openssl/slapd.conf.
if i su to that user with root i can change the password using passwd. the new password stored in the ldap object is hashed with ssha like it should be.
but login doesn't work until i set the userpassword to some crypted password hash.
my system runs an up to date fedora core 2.

can somebody please help me. i'm really pissed off working on this case for the last three hours without getting any further. :-(
