No video playback of an av file in mplayer eh? That should have been your title!

How did you install mplayer?
Can you open the file with gmplayer?
Have you tried ogg/theora?
Could you copy the terminal output to your reply?
Have you tried changing the video driver that mplayer uses?

Can you play these files with totem?

Mauriat's guide is excellent. But you've got to take care to understand the instructions.

Quote:
[VO_SUB_VIDIX] Couldn't find working VIDIX driver.
There you go, you don't have a driver for your video. If you get similar errors for any video format, you'll need to do the reinstall.

You have tried only non-free codecs.
Go get a utility called ffmpeg2theora (yum install ffmpeg2theora) and convert a file to ogg/theora. See if that will play. (If so then you need only install the non-free codecs.)

Ogg stream 0 is of an unknown type
Video: no video
... curious: suggests ffmpeg didn't know how to convert the vidix component either. (ogg stream 0 is the video)... or, maybe, the theora codecs are not there either? OR maybe when you specify "--no-gui", the configure script assumes you are running mplayer in a text only environment and so "helps" you by not installing any video codecs?

Here's how it goes: you have no vidix driver/codec.
That is what the previous "Couldn't find working VIDIX driver" (quoted message #4) was all about.

avi "format" is a container. It contains audio and video files. The audio is in mp3 format, the video is in xvid. I notice there is a problem with svga_helper working with xvidix.

Try:

mplayer -vo xv -v yourfile.avi

If you have totem installed, see if it will play the ogg. But I doubt it: it looks like the video component just didn't get converted.
