Question Problem with installing package

I have a problem! I tried to upgrade kdebase in synaptic. There were some problems so I decided to install it manually (by rpm) package by package. As I tried to install arts (with arts-devel at the same time) something went wrong and rpm bombed out. It seems that I have 2 versions of arts at the same time. I opened synaptic, and let him re-install arts. It also bombed out ( ), and I also had to close it not in polite way (just as rpm). This incident probably damaged my package db in some way, and i really don't know what to do.
Any suggestions ???
Is there any way to repair the db manually ??

Why, using the same synaptic you do not uninstall it first. Seems as logical step for me before installing again and again

My synaptic halts when starting it. Also rpm halts in this case. I think programs stop while reading db.

Talking

Slackware, man. Slack is your solution!

No, seriously. Reboot box start it up without X server.
as root
#updatedb

If it doesn't help use install cd and start up with cd inside. Choose installation and then "repair installed system" or smt like that
