Exclamation Easy question - error message during...

I am a newbie installing Fedora Core 6. I received an error message almost before the installation and during the software package initializing. Almost there! Frustrating! In the error message I had a choice of re-trying or rebooting. After re-trying twice I rebooted and now I see this on my black screen with white letters:

GNU GRUB version 0.97 (639k lower / 523248k upper memory)

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename.]

grub> _

I don't think I am dead yet, but I certainly am stuck. I was hoping to get Fedora installed so I could get familiar with it over the weekend before work on Monday.

Thank you in advance for the help and replies! PLEASE HELP ME!!!

That is the grub console.
We need to know what the error was ... there are so many that end up there.

error message

I understand. Thanks so much for replying. So the grub console is up, ok, at least I know where I am and the motherboard still is in tack.

I do not remember what the error message said, but I do know that the error occurred during initializing the software pack just prior to the actual install. That is all I have. Am I screwed? Where can we go from here?

I really appreciate the help!

should I do something like that? I am even willing to start the whole install process over. Can I do that safely? If so what are the commands?

Thanks!

Oh yes... start the install again.
This is quite safe. The installer exited like that in order to protect you.

Just boot from the install disk again, and hit <enter> at the "boot:" prompt.
Pay attention to those messages in the black screen. Most of them are fine and go too fast to read, the important ones will jump out at you.

Reboot not working...

I did try and reboot. About 5 times. It keeps revertingback to the grub console. It is good that I am protected. I do wishto re install, but I am stuck here. Anything else I can do? Feel like calling me? cell is 425.772.7942

I am desperate and frustrated. But level headed. Just want to start tinkering with fedora. Can you call me?

looks like grub [bootloader] got installed but you don't have a proper config file for it. if /boot/grub/menu.lst is a link you need to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf, otherwise you can edit the menu.lst file to correct grub config file for your install. we are going to need a lot more info before we can help you with that though.

Try something like this. Ignore the bit about Vista - just follow the instructions to recover grub.

I tried it and it does not work? Maybe I was right about grub/ and Boot:

For the record, I do not see a blinking Boot: _

I see a grub/ _

Any thoughts?

I think I have grub

I say that because at the top of my screen it reads:

GNU GRUB version 0.97 (639k lower / 523248k upper memory)

In another post/thread here at LQ someone mentioned that I DO have the grub console.

It is up, and waiting for me to just type something into it.

I just need some simple commands is all.

Thanks so much for helping. Any suggestions so far?

SERIOUSLY: Help, my grub console is on and I cannot get out. What do I type to get out? Send email with instructions to: brettdix@msn.com

/boot/grub/menu.lst is the name of a file you need to edit. cd should get you into the /boot/grub directory. a quick look over the output of ls will tell you whether menu.lst is a link or not.
