Problem with Fedora 4, black screen of death.

Hello,

I recently bought the book "Fedora 4 Unleashed" and read the first few chapters on Installing Linux.

I followed all of the instructions very closely (several times) and was able to install Fedora 4 with no problems during the installation. The problem occurs is when I reboot. After finishing the install, the screen presents the graphical interface, the hour glass begins turning, a graphic of a computer comes up on the screen and begins displaying status information (such as "getting host name").

During this process the screen suddenly turns black and the machine no longer responds to any commands.

I've already spent a whole weekend trying to figure it out but I am completely lost.

My laptop is an Acer TravelMate 290. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am a total newbie to Linux. I haven't had the chance to learn any commands or anything because I've yet to be able to use Linux.

Thanks,
Evan

If you can't get a console by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 repeatedly, then try rebooting into runlevel 3, log in as root and /var/log/Xorg.0.log for lines starting with "WW" or "EE". To boot into runlevel 3 this one time, at the grub boot screen, edit your kernel boot arguments adding a " 3" at the end.

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
