Problem with CUPS
Hello,
I am having a problem printing over my local network. The configuration is 2 pcs both running Fedora 21 64 bit. PC 1 has a Brother L2360DW laser printer. Both pcs are on the same network (ip addresses 192.168.0.5 and 192.168.0.6). If I try to print a document from Adobe Reader from PC2, it does not print. If I go to localhost:631 on PC2 and look at the Jobs tab and click Show all jobs the job shows up. If I then go to PC1 and localhost:631 there and go to the Jobs tab and click Show all jobs, it shows up there also. When I look at the printer I can see the message Receiving data. Nothing prints. If I then go to PC1 and open the same file there and try to print it, it prints. Is it possible to look at what is being sent to the printer in both cases to find out what is different? Thanks, Vince Radice |
Have you examined the CUPS log for errors?
This Fedora HOW-TO could be useful here. It mentions for Fedora 21 (and later) to use Quote:

I was able to turn on debug and captured the messages related to the problem. I have looked at the logs from both pcs but I can't figure out from all of the messages what is still happening. I have attached both logs. Pc1 is where I issue the prin command from. Pc2 is where the printer is located. Can someone look at these and help me figure out what is going wrong?
Also, does CUPS save the spooled output someplace where I can look at it? Is it possible that something is being added or deleted in the transmission process? |
before you go to far with fedora 21
21 is about to hit it's ----- !!! END OF LIFE !!! ----- fedora 23 will be released in FIVE DAYS so in 35 DAYS!!! all support for 21 will end there will NEVER be a security update of bug fix for 21 21 will be affectedly dead and UNSUPPORTED so install 22 now or 23 in 5 days " Adobe Reader " the microsoft adobe reader dose not work well on linux OS's and the antique linux one is 8 years old Adobe has dropped support for linux WHY are you not using the fedora DEFAULT installed pdf editor "Evince" |

My current OS in not the point. I will upgrade to 23 after it has had a chance to shake out any real bugs.
In the meantime I tried a few things. (1) Tried evince to look at document and then print part of it. Nothing was printed. (2) Recabled the printer to pc1 and installed the printer. Using Adobe I tried to print part of a document. It worked. (3) Tried to print using evince with printer cabled to pc1. It also worked. (4) When trying to print using evince I noticed something strange - there was an extra printer choice in the evince print dialog. I recabled the printer back to pc2 and tried the extra printer. Printing from pc1 to the printer on pc2 worked. I have attached a screenshot of the evince dialog and the printers tab from localhost:631. Can anyone explain where the extra printer is hiding in the evince dialog? Also will CUPS 2.1.0 be included in Fedora 23? |
you have 5 printers set up
what one is set as default and what one is pc1 and pc2 set up to use |
CUPS will show any local printers defined in /etc/cups/printers.conf and any remote CUPS shared printers advertised by CUPS servers on the network. Perhaps that's why you observe additional printers.
This will report all known printers Code:
lpstat -t |
The printer that I am trying to use is a Brother L2360DW. It is connected to pc2 (aka Carol). To test to see if the printer was capable of printing the document I wanted I unplugged it from pc2 and connected to pc1 (aka Vince). When it was plugged into pc1, I was able to print to it. When I moved it back to pc2 it did not work.
The default printer on pc1 is a Brother MFC240C (a color ink jet printer). The default printer on pc2 is the Brother L2360DW (a lazer printer). Lere is the output from lpstat lpstat -t scheduler is running system default destination: MFC240C device for Brother_HL-L2360D_series_Carol: dnssd://Brother20HL-L2360D%20series%20%40%20Carol._ipp._tcp.local/cups device for Epson_Stylus_NX210: usb://EPSON/Stylus%20NX210?serial=4C39534B3037393947&interface=1 device for HL-L2360D-series: usb://Brother/HL-L2360D%20series?serial=U63883L4N590564 device for MFC240C: usb://Brother/MFC-240C device for MFC7240: usb://Brother/MFC-240C?serial=BROD8F847542 Brother_HL-L2360D_series_Carol accepting requests since Fri 23 Oct 2015 01:46:30 AM EDT Epson_Stylus_NX210 accepting requests since Sat 17 Oct 2015 11:49:15 PM EDT HL-L2360D-series accepting requests since Fri 23 Oct 2015 04:12:23 PM EDT MFC240C accepting requests since Thu 22 Oct 2015 07:20:58 AM EDT MFC7240 accepting requests since Wed 16 Sep 2015 12:50:53 PM EDT printer Brother_HL-L2360D_series_Carol is idle. enabled since Fri 23 Oct 2015 01:46:30 AM EDT Sending data to printer. printer Epson_Stylus_NX210 disabled since Sat 17 Oct 2015 11:49:15 PM EDT - Unplugged or turned off printer HL-L2360D-series disabled since Fri 23 Oct 2015 04:12:23 PM EDT - Unplugged or turned off printer MFC240C is idle. enabled since Thu 22 Oct 2015 07:20:58 AM EDT printer MFC7240 is idle. enabled since Wed 16 Sep 2015 12:50:53 PM EDT HL-L2360D-series-1083 vince 25600 Fri 23 Oct 2015 04:30:22 PM EDT This shows 5 printers and yet in the print dialog for evince there are 6 printers listed. Where did the 6th printer come from? |
I've never used Evince but it makes no sense to me why Evince should enumerate an additional printer to those advertised by CUPS, so I'd conclude that as a bug that should be reported.
FWIW, it was also asked here with no conclusive answer given. |
i beleive he said they are evicting all fedora 21 users
but they have no upgrade path if your (computer) is not compatible (does not meet min. requirements) with fedora 23 |
try LPRNG
unix programs print to "lp" (or lpd) by default intalling and configuring LPRNG may be easier for you than cups. depends. ie, put your printer type and /dev/lpr_name in /etc/printcap, about done, run daemon configuring cups and all having all the "right version libs and many configurations configred only by apache web server" and all that can be a pain, so if lpd(1) works it may be easier. really depends on you and how you work. |
people said unix lpd was too complicated in 1995 / win95 days, and cups people say that
but i've had the same /etc/printcap (only one major revision, for using ppd) in 20 years. two edits of a text file in 20 years was that worth crying over? i'd call it the best way myself. |
