problem updating kernel

when i try to install new version of kernel(i tried to install kernel 2.0.39

beta)i complete running the 'make config'command successfully but later when

i run 'make dep' command i get the following error message.

gcc -I/usr/src/kernel/linux/include -02-formit-framr-pointer -o scripts/mkdep scripts/makedep.c
make : gcc:command not found
make :***[scripts/mkdep]error 127.

what could be the reason for this.this is the first kernel iam updating on

REDHAT 7.2.if i want to check the version of gcc what shoud i do for that.
..............thank you
