Question problem running mysql


hello
I have a debian 2.2 and I installed mysql 3.23.44 binary
I start the server with mysqld -u mysql as root and i answered me : mysqld: ready for connections

when I try to connect to it with mysql -h '172.16.3.54' -ppass
I have this error :
ERROR 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query

please help me
