problem playing dvd with totem
Hi All,
Just bought Springsteens new album with dvd and thought I'd play it on the old Debian 3.1 (which I'm still fairly new to). The Totem package tries to open the DVD, but displays an error - 'totem could not play the movie' Should I try another package? or something else? The drive itself seems fine in as far as it will open and read files, also its new so should be ok... (I don't have internet connection on the machine so upgrade not that easy) Thanks for help, Greeb. |
Do you have libdvdcss installed? Totem can definitely play DVD's but you might need the DVD decryption routines in order to do this...

Thanks
Thanks for the help, I use synaptic package manager to install stuff and there's no package with that name. I did however find some similar named packgs and installed them with limited success. Package names like libdvd... looked hopeful so I installed some of them. When I put the dvd in the drive it now loads and shows the dvd menu - play movie, play music, etc and when I use the mouse to point at these the pointer changes - everything looks good until you click, then a message at the bottom left of the totem window says 'streaming' and nothing else happens..
Many thanks for help, Greeb |
Hmmm, if its getting as far as the menus then I think you're doing pretty well and maybe don't even need the dvd decryption routines for that DVD. They can be a bit harder to find using synaptic as some of the standard updates sites don't contain it as it's legality is a bit questionable.
Have you tried MPlayer or VLC (Video Lan Client) instead of Totem? I usually find Xine (program underneath Totem) a lot better but if you're having problems they could be worth a go. |
