Problem installing supermount patch

OK, I'm trying to install the supermount-1.2.11a-2.4.21 patch for a 2.4.21-99 kernel on SuSE 9.0. I copied the patch into /usr/src, then I runed: patch -p1 <(patch name). It created some files on /usr/src and prompted me to specify the correct path to the files to patch, so I had to substitute "linux-2.4.21/file/path" for "linux-2.4.21-99/file/path" for each case. It patched all the files. But now the supermount howto says I must build kernel, install and reboot. My question is how do I do it? what comand I must use to do it? and in what directory? On the other hand, the patch readme file says: "To run supermount, compile and install a kernel with the supermountpatches and select "Y" to the question

Supermount removable media support (CONFIG_SUPERMOUNT) [Y/n/?]

+when you run "make config".

In what directory I must run "make config"? Can anyone help me?? Thanks in advance.

To apply a patch, cd into the kernel source and then
patch -p1 < /path/to/patchname

Then compile and install the kernel. I don't remember how to do that with a 2.4 kernel. It's been more than a year. My memory's not that good. Ask Google. Google knows everything

First of all, thanks for answering. I alredy applied the patch with the command patch p1 <(patch_name). It patched all the files, The problem is, what comes next?, I mean, I already have the kernel installed, but how to compile it and do the patch effective? Thanks in advance.
