problem installing ndiswrapper-1.52 on debian etch

I'm trying to install ndiswrapper-1.52 in debian etch.
This is what i did:

# make distclean

and got the error as:

Makefile:35: *** Cannot find kernel version in /lib/modules/2.6.18-5-486/build, is it configured?. Stop.

Kindly help if this is not the right way of doing it.

It would be easier to install the 1.28-1 version that comes in Debian etch..

aptitude update
aptitude keep-all
aptitude install build-essential module-assistant
m-a update
m-a prepare
m-a a-i ndiswrapper

if you still want to install 1.52 instead, then skip the last line of my directions, and try your compile of 1.52 again. The early steps in the commands I posted will download and install everything for your compile environment including the kernel headers and whatnot that you need to compile against.

I followed the above steps, everything worked fine until the last command which responded with

"ndiswrapper: what is ndiswrapper?"

so I then replaced it with:

m-a a-i ndiswrapper-5.2.0

which completed successfully but when I checked the installation, it says

"driver invalid!"

http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/j...oubleshooting/
Quote:
If you get “invalid driver” for any driver in the output of ndiswrapper -l, then remove that driver (with ndiswrapper -r) and reinstall the Windows driver as per instructions in Installation.
Is there a specific driver it's calling invalid ?
