Problem installing dual boot mandrake and SuSE...

Hello!
While repartitioning my hard drive, I thought it would be interesting to load two distributions on separate partitions, one mandrake and one SuSE, for comparison (and maybe I would finally be able to get my nvidia card going in one or the other, as well ;-)

I started by installing SuSE in an ext2 partition, along with a 512 MB swap partition. Next I installed mandrake in an ext2 partition, taking up the rest of the drive.

I had assumed that when the system rebooted, I would be offered the option of booting into the SuSE partition since previously (before this particular disk reformat) the mandrake bootloader had offered me the option of booting into the (now defunct) nt partition. No such option this time. What step did I miss?

thanks in advance,
doug

I found some threads on this since it's a little in depth I figure they might help more than my quick reply:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=25807

:)

If you still have problems after reading those 2 threads, please post back so we can help further or clarify the part you are having particular problem with :)

Cool

Hello!
The most likely looking bit of info I found from these links was where it said:

"
* Install distro 1
* Make sure that /home (or whatever) are on separate partitions to /
* Make sure distro 1 is working
* Install distro 2 to a separate partitions, but possibly set it up to use the same /home partition as distro 1.
* DO NOT INSTALL BOOTLOADER FOR DISTRO 2
* Boot to distro 1
* Mount the / partition for distro 2
* Copy the kernel image from distro 2's / partition to the relevant place on distro 1's system.
* Edit your lilo.conf file (or grub) and add a new entry for distro 2
* Re-run LiLo to put the changes in place
* Reboot your machine and see a nice new bootmenu with Distro 1 and Distro 2 in the list
"

I will not be able to try this til I get home tonight, but one thing jumps out at me: the instruction "DO NOT INSTALL BOOTLOADER FOR DISTRO 2", which in this case would be SuSE 8.0 . I had installed this last night, and I don't recall where in the graphical installation process I am offered the option of not installing the boot loader. Would that perhaps be at the point where you are offered the option of creating a boot disk and/or writing to the MBR?

regards,
doug
