Problem in recovering deleted files (error : bad magic number)

I have accidentally rm -rf ed some directory (in FAT32 partition) which I badely need. And then I did one more blunder I switched to windows to use some recovery utility of windows (I trusted them). It didn't showed up my files. Now when I am trying to recover the files through debugfs it is giving following error

/dev/hda8: Bad magic number in super-block while opening filesystem
lsdel: Filesystem not open

Is there still some hope left. I need my files badly. Please help me.

I don't know on which forum this mail will fit so I am resending same mail once again on this forum (after finding no replies from general forum)

Thanks in advance

I tried but it saying following

fsck: fsck.vfat: not found
fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.vfat for /dev/hda8

I find no fsck.vfat entry in /sbin/ for such file.

fdisk -l gives following entry for the corrupted partition.

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part8 2448 4865 19422553+ b Win95 FAT32

trying e2fsck /dev/hda8 gives following errors

Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks...
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hda8

Tried some alternat locations for super block but of no avail.

Do I need to install fsck.vfat, or what I need to do.

Hi,

debugfs is alredy installed on my comp I have ceated symbolic link /sbin/fsck.vfat -> /sbin/dosfsck. I guess this is what I had to do only. Ran fsck , now it was running . Got following output

fsck -y /dev/hda8
fsck 1.35 (28-Feb-2004)
dosfsck 2.9, 15 May 2003, FAT32, LFN
/dev/hda8: 2529 files, 1039546/1213316 clusters

fsck -f /dev/hda8
fsck 1.35 (28-Feb-2004)
dosfsck 2.9, 15 May 2003, FAT32, LFN
/dev/hda8: 2529 files, 1039546/1213316 clusters

but the debugfs /dev/hda8 is still giving the same problem

debugfs 1.35 (28-Feb-2004)
/dev/hda8: Bad magic number in super-block while opening filesystem

Thanks

Thanks masand for putting all efforts.

I have unmounted the partition first.

Sorry to say I actually forgot the tool name. Since yesterday I had been trying other options and thats why.... but seemingly people have good experience with that tool I took it from some of my acquaintance.

I am almost loosing my hope, so right now I am rather trying to learn the recovery than actually hoping to get my actual data.

Yeah fine I will knock you sometime on messenger, right now I have some work. I have unmounted that partition, so it will maintain its status (in the hope that I may get some solution within few days).
