Hi,
I had Fedora installed on my PC, but due to problems with running it on my dual boot pc, I switched to Ubuntu 10.1 which worked fine using the grub to dual boot..
Since then I heard that Mandriva had the new 3d environment preconfigured on the latest release, so I downloaded the bit torrent file for this and tried to install it.
The kernels loaded for the install to begin, but it crashed out. I then tried to install 2 separate Ubuntu downloads and they wouldnt install either, both giving kernel panics.
Does anyone have any idea why I should be having these problems, when I had no problems before?
thanks,
tim
Hi,
With Fedora, it was initially a modem problem, fixed by buying an ethernet modem, but then I realised by reading what was happening during the boot process, there was an error appearing in which Fedora was unable to control the cooling fan.
Mandriva didnt get to the stage of making any partitions. It loaded the kernel and brought up a screen with the standard Linux options with the choice of install, rescue, boot from drive etc. When I selected install, the installation crashed out on the next screen, with no error messages. I had to switch off the computer.
Windows and Suse 10.1 still boot ok using Grub, although Grub seems to take a bit longer to load than before for some reason and I think that Suse is running a bit slower.
Thats about all I can say. Any help would be great.

p.s. The Suse install cd works, but NO others. System has definately slowed down. Am wondering if i should reinstall Suse first to try to repair file system. I've tried using the Suse auto repair, but with no luck.
Does booting OS install from CD rely on Grub or is it independent?
I've just realised that if I leave mandriva on the screen in which it stalls, I eventually get the message 'initiation failure', which comes up in the type of text box which you get using a non-graphical linux installer interface.
Can anyone help me with this prob. Suse has taken over my system for some reason. The only linux boot installation disk that will work on my system now is Suse!
Fedora is being ignored completely. Mandriva, Edubuntu and Ubuntu start to install but initiation fails. Strange.....
