Problem creating samba 3.x user account

Hi there --

I am trying to create samba 3.03 users on a system running the CentOS 5.3 distribution. I log into the system as root, and I type the following command:

smbpasswd -a <username>

I follow the on-screen prompts for the passwords, and no errors are reported. However, when I check the smbpasswd file, I notice that the user account, along with all others listed, have the NOPASSWORDXXXXX... text next to them. I know that to mean the user accounts are not ready for use.

I confirmed the smbd and nmbd daemons are running. Does anyone have an idea as to why this is occurring, and how I can correct it? Thanks.

Did you run smbpassed as root?
