you should always install windows first (rule #1 ) and now you know why... you need to use your bootdisk which you DID make ddidn't you...? get into the system that way and then run lilo as to reinstall it on the mbr.

When you installed win98, it wrote into the MBR and that eliminated the lilo boot program. Did you make a boot disk when you installed linux? If you did, use it to boot into linux and as root run the command /sbin/lilo. Reboot

Isn't it only viruses that overwrite your master boot record without your permission?

Permission implies asking. Windoze has never been known to ask anyone's permission, or opinion, about anything important.

Windoze just unconditionally takes over the MBR without asking if it can be allowed do that on YOUR computer. Linux LETS you correct that situation. Linux is not only better, it is more polite . A characteristic sadly lacking in most places and situations in this ole world .

<ring ring>
"tech support, how can i help?"
"I have a virus!"
"oh yes? how do you know?"
"all my files have been erased! My master boot record has been cleared! My computer runs at half the speed! Several gigabytes of my hard drive has been filled up with meaningless drivel! And it keeps crashing all the time!"
"OK calm down, we'll send someone round to determine which virus you have"
"Oh i know that... It's that windows XP virus i have heard about! The one made by micro$oft! Luckily i have heard it can't infect ext2 drives...." (et cetera ad infinitum)

Did you make this up? If you got it off somewhere, I'd love to get the link to it...
