printing from gimp/abiword/anything!! using cups.

Hi all

I am trying to figure out how to print from gimp amongst other programs using cups.

My printer is installed in cups, can test print from browser no worries but cant for the life of me figure out how to print from Gimp. is there some sort of configuration I have to do to tell gimp to use cups?

or for that matter to tell abiword or other software packages to use cups?

I have also tried setting up lpd as that seems to be what most editors etc want to use.
I edited printcap to say:
Sharp | Sharp:\
:force_localhost:\
:lp=/dev/usb/lp0:\
# :af=/usr/local/lib/Sharp-AJ-2000-pcl3.ppd:\
:if=/usr/bin/foomatic-rip:\
:filter_options= --lprng $Z /usr/local/lib/Sharp-AJ-2000-pcl3.ppd:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/sharp:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:
if I: lpr -PSharp -Jdocs /proc/cpuinfo
I get this: lpr: Sharp: unknown printer

what have I done wrong?

using kde's print manager I can see my configuration. one thing that seems odd is that the device is listed as being on parralell:/dev/usb/lp0
whereas using cups it appears:
usb://SHARP/AJ-2000

Halp!

If you use kde's print manager you need to use the command 'kprinter' from the apps you want to print from.Gimp got it's own drivers for printing. You'll probably need to install those but thats distro specific.Might be included or a package like gnome-print or something like that.

errk!
now you've got me confused!

with gimp it 'sees' my lpd printer but nothing happens.

what I really would like to do is print from any application using cups. how do I do this??

oh.. hang on I just figured it out!!!

now I gotta connect me printer up again and see what happens!

Cheers for that!
