Printer Drivers from MFGs

In another thread, i just found what is (for me) a first:

Samsung offers Linux drivers for their printers on their website. (they even list them before the Windows Drivers!!!---I know, alphabetical)

So---is this a first? Or are there others out there?

I reported previously that I have e-mail from HP saying "we're working on it."

I don't know.

But I surely hope Canon will see the light, too, cuz I hate my LBP800 is listed as 'paperweight' at linuxprinting.org!)

Have you contacted Canon and asked them?

Ask them what? It just doesn't work. It is not POSTSCRIPT compliant, AFAIK.

I am not sure that a printer has to support Postscript to work on Linux...

My suggestion was simply to see what Canon would say if you asked them--"How do I get this working on Linux."

I checked http://software.canon-europe.com/Pri.../LBP800551.asp , and it doesn't list any Linux / Unix driver.
I also tried searching on the canon official site.

When I tried to submit a question, FOA I had to register, then there was a required field: product; but LBP800 (really outdated) was not even in the list. So I selected a random product (BubbleJet printer) and submitted a question. Now I'm waiting. Mybe they don't even provide support for this POS???!!!

Really? That's odd because HP printers have had some of the best Linux support of any of them. They even have a whole site devoted to it:
http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/

Here is their answer:

Canon unfortunately do not develop any Linux drivers for any of their printers.
I think this says it all...
