Pressing question about RealPlayer and RedHat 9.0

It is now beyond doubt that RealPlayer 8.0 (and its Plugin ) does not work with RedHat 9.0
This raises some very important questions for the community
1) Why has this happened. I have visited this forum

http://realforum.real.com/cgi-bin/un.../wwwthreads.pl

but even there the people do not have a clue whats happening. The most they say is that there is something wrong with glibc version being used in RedHat 9.0. Now Linux is supposed to be OpenSource and the beauty of this is that bugs get resolved quickly since the source is there for everyone to see.Yet there is complete silence reagrding this issue.

2) Is this mistake on part of Real or RedHat? This is important because there is a lot of Real Media stuff out there and people want RealPlayer to work on their Linux boxes and would like to know if RedHat is going down the same path as M$ : Release buggy software as quickly as possible in the market and then start fixing bugs as they get discovered (BTW, this means that they introduce more , newer, bugs therein :) )

3) Neither Real have realeased(well they are not supposed to) a patch nor (surprisingly! :o ) has RedHat.. Anyone knows why this attitude form one of the leading vendors of RedHat

4) Lastly, is there any resolution to this bug?

Thankx in advance...

Realplayer is not opensource. If there's actually a problem here it's RealNetworks you should be looking to for answers. The very fact that the Linux kernel and the apps that manage and run your system are open source and widely available to the people who develop RealMedia players and tools would preclude that there isn't much more the Open Source community can offer to their endeavors. The realplayer that you download is a binary. You are stuck with whatever compile-time options and tools they chose to use. Apparently these are linked to different libraries than the one RedHat uses.

FYI, you don't need Realplayer to play realmedia files; mplayer works for me. You might need the codecs/plugins that are available at mplayer's website, but other than that, it's the same as all others:
mplayer -vo xv /path/to/file/realmedia.rm
mplayer -vo xv http://whatever.com/movies/realmedia.rm
Or you can get the mplayer plugin for your browser:

HTH

Cool

RealPlayer 9 works in RH9 - but so far only as root (for me) I think it's a permissions thing. If I can get it to work as other users I'll post back.

in a terminal type: LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 realplay

this will start RealPlayer

RealPlayer DOES exist for 9.0!

I had the same problem with RealPlayer after upgrading to RH 9.0 - This url describes how to get RealPlayer to work with RH 9.0 and it DOES! Just follow the directions step-by-step.

drkitty,

Thanks for that post! You helped me get RP8 working under RH9. I appreciate it.

Dave
