pppd daemon died un expectedly!
I first posted this in the hardware section, because I thought it was my modem giving me the trouble. Now I'm not so sure. When I try to connect with kppp, the log says "OK OK", and on the bottom it says "Expecting: CONNECT". Then after about thirty seconds I get this error:

Who is your ISP? It sounds like they are kicking you off line. Just curious.
Later :D :D :D :D |
My ISP is a local dial up service. I don't think it's even getting that far. I don't hear a dial tone or the modem dialing or anything. I guess, now that I think of it, that information would have been useful at first.

Thanks again. |
It may be that you have Kppp pointing to the wrong port. Go under the device tab and see if it is pointing to /dev/ttyS0 or S1 if it is external or S4 or S5 if it is internal. You can also turn up the volume so that you can hear the dialing.
Back in a bit. :D :D :D :D |
Under the device tab, kppp is pointed to /dev/modem. Which is a symbolic link to ttyS4. I would like to point kppp to ttyS4, but it is not in the menu of options. The "setserial" command has got me nowhere.

Is this a winmodem by any chance? Did you turn up the volume and see if you can hear anything?
Trying to narrow this one down a bit. It sounds like it doesn't see the modem for some reason. Post model if you don't know if it is a winmodem or not. I'll search and see what I can find. Also post the results of this from a console: Code:

My modem is a 56K* V.92 Performance Pro Modem . The drivers are supposed to be built in the kernal. However, you can also download the RH drivers from the USR web site. I don't think it's a driver problem though. This modem did work, right out of the box, at one time. It just started giving me troubles, for no apparent reason. Thinking I would just start from scratch, I reinstalled linux. That's what any seasoned windows user would do.;) Anyway, that's where I am now.

BTW, it doesn't matter how loud I have the volume. The sounds come from the modem itself, not the speakers. And, it's louder than any modem I've ever had. I don't know if that's useful, but I did forget to mention it.

Well it sees the modem is there so. Go into the setup of Kppp then the device tab. There should be a listing for the serial ports. Try each of them and see if it connects. If not go into Mandrake Control Center and then Network and Internet then DrakConnect. It should walk you through the setup.
Oh, in Kppp you can adjust the volume under the Modem tab. Put the slider in the middle. It is probably all the way to the right. I don't have a internal modem but MCC should see it if nothing else does. Later :D :D :D :D |
Thanks for responding guys.
It has always seen the modem, and correctly identified it. I've already tried all that in kppp and MCC, with no results. I got this from one of the many sites that I've been to while searching for answers: Quote:
When I do this the modem does dial, but of course, doesn't sign in. My assumption is that the modem is working if it can dial out. But, still in kppp it doesn't dial. I just get the original error that I posted. Does anyone have any other ideas. I'm starting to think that I can't use linux on this computer. |
I'm still curious, does your ISP let you connect using Linux? There are some that do not. If it is dialing but not actually connecting, it may be a ISP problem. Make sure your login and password are correct.
It should also give a error message. When it disconnects tell Kppp you want those details. If you can, post them here. That will help us figure out what is going on. I can't do much more without some more info. Post back what you can. Later :D :D :D :D |
OK, this is where I'm at:
Under the device tab in kppp, it is set to /dev/modem. If I query modem in kppp, it goes through the thing where it goes "ATI 1, ATI 2, etc." Then at the end it comes up with the results, and my modem is listed, along with all the other things that you get after a query. If I use any of the other settings for the query, I get either "modem not detected" or " modem doesn't respond". When I try to connect using kppp, the conection log says "OK OK', and at the very bottom, in the status bar, it says "expecting connect". After thirty secondes I get this error: Quote:

Now, I did call my ISP, just to be sure that they allowed linux users. The guy almost sounded offended that I would even ask. His response was "Of course we allow linux users. We're not partial to any operating system that you want to use, and we don't care what you use. I do myself use Suse from time to time." I guess that answered my question. But, he didn't know how to fix my particular problem. However, the problem seems to be (to me anyways) associated with the "Serial line is looped back" error that I posted previously in the ppp log. But I don't know. Does this error, for example, prevent my modem from dialing in kppp? I am assuming that it does, because this modem did work. Thanks again! p.s. To quote myself: Quote:

BTW, the modem isn't even trying to connect. No sounds out of the modem what-so-ever. That's why I don't believe that it's my ISP.

OK, I found out that you should not have the serial loopback feature turned on. I'm trying to find out how to cut that "feature" off.
Meantime, check these: Click setup then open the account you have setup. In the Dial tab make sure Authentication is set to 'PAP'. IP tab, Check 'Dynamic IP address'. Gateway tab, Check 'default gateway' and check 'Assign the default' thingy. DNS tab, Your domain will likely be localhost or blank. Check 'automatic'. Login script tab, Select 'expect' rest should be blank. Execute tab, blank, nothing here. Now back to the main setup page. Device tab, modem device, which ever works and tries to connect to the modem. Flow control is Hardware [CRTSCTS], Line termination 'CR', Connection speed is 115200. That is the serial port not the modem over the phone line. Modem tab, whatever makes you happy here. Graph tab, what ever. Don't matter. Misc tab, pppd timeout 60 seconds. Show clock on caption and Disconnect on X server shutdown are both checked. Nothing else. See if yours matches that since mine works and it sounds like the ISP is supportive of Linux. While you are checking that, I'll be diggin around seeing how to turn off the 'feature' that is the problem. Post back if that helps. I'll put my shovel away then. Later :D :D :D :D |
