I have a Linksys WPC54G Rev. 2 in my SuSE 9.3 Professional system. I'm using ndiswrapper as the module to support the card and KDE's KInternet for wireless connections. It functions very similar to the "View Available Wireless Networks" utility in Windows XP; but of course much better and much more informative. I can scan for networks, connect to them, and see all the statistics including IP, Default Gateway, Subnet, Broadcast Address, MAC of the AP, etc. I find this to be the best method for using wireless.
Of course, if you are using the command line you could always install kismet and listen for networks that way. Then logon to one by issuing a command similar to this:
root@linux#: iwconfig wlan0 essid "network-name" key HEX-WEP-KEY
Obviously there are going to be differing parameters depending on the way the WiFi network or your system was configured. For example if you're using an atheros chipset, it creates it's own interface: ath0.
You can also set the sensitivity by specifing sens 1, 2, or 3 at the end of the command. Alternatively, if you are using a string to log on instead of a WEP-KEY then you would put: key s:STRING.
Hope this helps.
