Does it always do this? Mine kicks up that sometimes, seems to be whenever someone decides to phone us when I'm online.
Try Kppp -> Setup... -> Edit account -> Customise pppd Arguments... -> "debug" (without quotes), Add.
From man pppd:

Ok, which distro are you using?
Do you have a 56kmodem and an ethernet card connected to your machine? What's the result of the route command (as root)? Have you disabled any Network service?
