Powerstrip type utility
 

I'm a linux newb, so I don't know too much so don't expect me to know alot, I've just been using it for about a month. Finnaly got everything working right.

My monitor is screwed up and the brightest it goes... isn't bright enough. So with Windows I would use a prog called powerstrip, is there anything like that for linux, or any other way to increase the brightness? I got a radeon 9700 Pro. I know with windows you can increase the brightness withen the control panel (but it didn't work like tons of things don't in windows, it would always reset when I tried to play a game)

I am also wondering about such a program, please, anyone help us

I am a new user :newbie: and have the same problem. Does any one know any utility like powerstrip? Something at least close to it.

oh, wow this thread is sooo old lmao. Dec 03. But anyways. I solved my problem, I got a new monitor! But other than that, I did find a way to fix it. However being that it was a year ago, and I hadn't used it since then. I'm not sure if I remember. Try any of these commands (I'm on my windows part. right now, having trouble setting up linux because of sata and I use slackware).

If you have an ati card, which I did, and I think this is what I used I believe it was flgrx gamma. x gamma or xgamma, something like that. Try all of those. There was a way to do it, no program needed it's just a command. However a command that I forget.

Yeah, you're right! There is an xgamma command, but how do i use it to change screen resolution? Please help me!

you can't change the screen resolution? I'm thinking you mean gamma. Just type xgamma, it should tell you what the current brightness is if you don't put in anything. Then just type xgamma "something higher"

if yuor current is say 4 put 5 or 6. Should work. I remember it wouldn't work for me with my aticard tho, but I had an nvidia card and it worked. So with nvidia use xgamma with ati use fglrx gamma or fglrxgamma or something. Hope I helped you guys.

OK, got it with the xgamma. But for SOME reasons I actually need to set custom resolution of the screen. If it is not possible in Linux, it won't do anything bad to me, its just that I wanted to move completely to Linux, but my other computer NEEDS to be set to custom resolution. I'd be glad if someone knew a command or soft that can do that. And kryptobs2000, thanks for helping!

What do you mean a custom resolution? Like just one that is not standard. What distro are you using? You can edit some conf file, but I forget like I said I havn't used linux in a few months. Thats an easy thing to answer tho, most people who have used linux should beable to help you with that. I'll go on my suse distro later and tell you what you need to do.

I think I found it! If you go to Sax2, you can add a CUSTOM resolution! Yes, custom as in not 1024x768 or all those resolutions. I still won't tell ya what for, but i needed a resolution 960x540, and that is not ordinary. If you guessed, it is not for a monitor. Ok, that solves the problem for me!!!

Ok, I know this thread is like, really old, but I just want to post this as a FINAL SOLUTION to any problem with custom resolution if anyone needs it...

First thing is to open Sax2. Then you should go to "Color and Resolution" and then click on the "Expert" tab. Specify the needed resolution and click set. Thats it! Your resolution was added to the list!

I needed this cuz I have a front projector for watching movies on our white wall in the basement :D . It's resolution is 1/4 of HDTV (it's pretty old) and so thats 960x540. The best quality output is when resolution is standard set on the projector and the settings on the computer are the same resolution. If you tune it a bit, you get a pixel-to-pixel effect which is awesome for watching movies like in a theater.

This might solve some other problems, but I believe there are most standard resolutions ready for use, unless you have something from another planet :D

Actually, I think Sax2 is the place to begin if you have poblems with your monitor or anything that deals with graphics.
