Postfix - Only SMTP?

I want to install Postfix, but is it only SMTP? Also, if it is, does anybody know of a good POP3 server? And one more question, what is a good site for a tutorial for Postfix?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I have qpopper now. Could somebody give me a tutorial for configuring postfix and qpopper? I have fould some but they are BSD related.

Thanks

google around dude. try www.google.com/linux and use

qpopper postfix

qpopper is very good... install it and run the server and Linux/Unix does the rest! Actually, if you think about it, Unix systems (Unix clones of course) have the best indigenous (or is homogenous a better term?) set up imaginable (users and security) but I digress...

Thanks, for qpopper, how do I start it and what is the default directory. Once that is done, do I need to do any configuration?

Thanks

should be installed in /usr/local/bin... since its a service youll have to go to /etc/rc.d/init.d and look for something like pop3 or a binary that looks like it.

the best thing to do would be to use the man pages and this will tell you how to start it. When i used it last year, i had a very standard mail server and didnt have to make one bit of configuration to it.

Thinkgeekness 03-09-2003 02:52 PM

I just looked for it in /usr/local/bin and /etc/rc.d/init.d and it wasnt there. I dont have anything in /usr/local/bin. But I did 'locate qpopper' and i found it in /etc/log.d/conf/services/in.qpopper.conf and I also found qpopper names in /etc/log.d/scripts/servoces/om.qpopper. Does any of those look like it would be instead of the two files that you named?

Thanks

Anybody? Should I only find those two files when located qpopper?

Thanks

Let me make sure I am installing this right. I followed the guide but I am not exactly sure on one part. It says:

Copy the resulting Qpopper executable to a public location. The executable is called popper and can be found in the popper subdirectory. Normally, typing make install does this for you.

Although there is no required location, may system administrators prefer /usr/local/lib, and this is used in example lines.

If you modify Qpopper, be sure to edit the file popper/banner.h and add a string.

This told me to do it right after I did the make command. What does it mean to copy it to a public location and to add a string to the banner.h file?

Next it says to do ./configure and make again, but where?

Thanks

i think the guide that you are following is for the tarball (.tar.gz) file. U can get and rpm file here:

http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/contri....1-1.i386.html

better yet, check the FAQ here:

http://www.qpopper.org/qpopper/faq.html

it has a mailing list that I suggest u subscribed to as, well, that is dedicated to qpopper where ur questiions will be answered by 'experienced' qpopper users.

Thinkgeekness 03-10-2003 09:37 PM

Okay, it is installed through the RPM. How do I start it?

Thanks

Thinkgeekness 03-11-2003 03:39 PM

So how do I start it? Also, once it is started (I just want to make sure) I shouldnt need to do anything else with POP3, right?

Thanks
