Post fix

Hi all

Just a quick question

Do you have to have postfix install on a linux box to run php forums Just wondering how the forums send mail out.

I've installed a LAMP server, and Postfix wasn't installed

only apache, mysql, ssh, vsftpd, php5-gd, imagemagick is on the system, trying to install a basic system with out all the extras.

TT

I believe it can use sendmail, too (pre-installed on many distributions).

I see I didn't want to install postfix, due to people trying to hack my server to send out spam mail.

I read my logs and you can see people trying so thats why i ask, is it ok not to install postfix

as I said before, I believe it can use sendmail instead of postfix.

for the security concern, a simple and very effective measure would be to use iptables to block external access to port 25 (I believe sending mails would still work)

it is generally a good idea to have a firewall running on a publicly accessible machine, too.
