Poll: What instant messenger do YOU use?

Hey folks.

Well, this should be a poll, however I've no idea of all the apps possible, so it'll be a posting poll! Very Happy

So yeah, what do you use?

When I was in Windows, I always used Gaim. Mainly because of tabbed chats & IMs, also it had GTKSpell, and various other nice things. It also was fast, and looked nice.

Just downloaded, and compiled it. Everything works, but I need to compile some SSL thing to get MSN working. Currently deciding whether to do it, upgrade Kopete or get something else.

So, what do YOU use?

I use aMSN. (amsn.sourceforge.net). I think it looks nicer than gaim, and it supports file transfer.

gaim, because it supports all of the protocols i use, is fast, and doesn't start a hundred processes like kopete.

hmm, I've never heard of either, I'm using msn atm, but soon I will be transferring to linux (yes I'm pre-newbie) and I was gonna try out trillian...

BigNate 08-14-2004 05:41 AM

I use gaim or naim (if I don't have X up)

Ah, nice. I'll have to check this out. May use this for MSN, and Gaim for others such as AIM, ICQ, YIM, IRC, etc.

Jazzben, Trillian does not work with Linux fully as far as I'm aware. I think some have got it working under Wine though. Trillian is really Windows specific, and Gaim and Kopete are the Linux equivalents. Although they also make Gaim for Windows though, which I preferred.

Hmm, seems like no one use Kopete then, interesting.

Latest gaim supports file transfer too, although it's quite slow.

I've been using Gaim for months and i think transfers are not as slow as jcspray says. No problem at all.

I use aMSN it works great and you even get to display a picture if you want.
And yes file transfer is very easy with it. It just makes a folder of it`s own (called aMSN received in your home directory) and everything conveniently gets put there.

Gaim or x-chat using /msg, that's IM isn't it. :)

PhuckFonix 08-14-2004 10:47 AM

On Slack 10, I use Kopete coz I have a KDE only setup and Fedora Core 2, I use GAIM. I think both are pretty good even though I seem to prefer GAIM over Kopete.
