specify "any player" (as in do you have xine based players?
for them (and mplayer but IIRC the codec locations are entered at compile time for it) go to www.mplayerhq.hu and in the downloads section grab the essential-codecs package. unzip it to /usr/lib/win32 and xine based players will find them automatically.
Hmmm try to reade the *.wmv with mplayer if it doesn't reade ur files then look on the site of mplayer the faq or howto or the man mplayer in the console

Distribution?
I have a script that grabs and installs all codecs needed to play any format but its debian based.
i'm currently using totem and having tried these steps i'm wondering if they should have worked...
should i change players or is there some other fix for totem that i haven't read about?
no, no. i did that and it was fun, but totem didn't recognize any of it. do i need to point the program towards the new directory? i'm fairly new to linux so i'm not sure about program dependencies
