PLS help? Trying to go from Samba 2.2.8a to 3.0

Hello gang! I am in desperate need of Samba 3 help. I have a windows 2003 domain (and domain controller). I can not get Samba 2.2.8a to join the 2003 domain. So, i downloaded the samba 3 binaries and followed the guide from my samba 3 book (complete how-to and reference guide) for compiling the code:

./configure
make
make install

I also downloaded CVS rpm, installed the rpm. Again, following the guide from the book ran the following commands:

cvs server:cvs@samba.org:/cvsroot login
type cvs as password
cvs server:cvs@samba.org:/cvsroot co -r SAMBA_3_0 samba

This last command is suppose to merge the new code into the old code apparently. However, it does not seem to "merge" the new samba 3 code into the samba 2.2.8 code? My question: what am i doing wrong?

Chris
