You could try h.263. I think avidemux2 does a nice job.

I've looked up RMVB and it is a proprietary codec by Real Networks. I don't think there will be a software to compress videos using RMVB codec because it is proprietary and there may not be any free software implementation of it.

Why not use any of the major free video codecs? XviD or Theora come to mind immediately. Both can be installed via yum. I use XviD extensively and it gives out excellent quality, at least for me.

Will the size decrease if i convert a video file[mpeg/dat/avi...etc] to XviD format without any loss in the quality of the video when compared with the original one ???

Real media Producer which i had in windows converts the videos to rmvb files and compresses it to 1/3 rd of the original video size with out any loss in quality....

What is Theora ?
Can we play it in Windows...?
Will it compress the file with out loss in quality??

Please tell me how to install XviD/Theora using yum ???

Is there any GUI to work with these converters...
OR
only CLI

Can u give me some basic commands to convet videos ??

well avi is a container while mpeg (like mpeg1, mpeg2 etc. )is a codec so depending on what codec you use and amount of compression you are bound to lose some quality when you compress video (this is true for any codec on the planet). Without quality loss is a misnomer. Video when compressed invariably loses quality...what differentiates good codecs from bad ones is the final quality and how it can be reproduced with least quality loss.

Check out the links below to gain more understanding of the various formats.

That's for you to research...for generalized questions like this google yum tutorial on the net.

I always use CLI but you can look at OggConvert and OGMRip.

Once you are ready, I can give you some of the links to tutorials. As I said, I extensively use xvid and mencoder to produce the xvid coded files.

Avidemux is a GUI video editing program that is also very easy to use as a transcoder.

It has a gui (or is one depending on your point of view).

You really need to learn how to use google.
