please help me (i'm new to linux)

hiya,
i recently installed redhat 9 and am having some major graphic card driver problems... originally all 3d was slow (tux racer and all the bundled software), but then i decided to mindlesses play around with it.

i first downloaded apt and did the synaptic update of everything. i know i have xfree86 4.3 so i downloaded the ati drivers and installed them. i configured fglrx and everything was fine except my crappy monitor didn't fit into the vsync and hsync ranges... i pushed it in the lowest anywho...

after this i've been trying to figure out what's wrong by reading the message boards but haven't been able to find something that really answers my question... i started the xfree server using:

xstart -- :1

and all of a sudden my machine rebooted... so i figured well maybe that's how it starts up? now tux racer or chromium (both 3d) won't even open... if i try them 2 times (either or just 2 times) i get logged out of my root directory!!!

i'm sorry for not having any idea really what i'm doing, but appreciate any help anyone can give me!

thanks alot,
Kevin

try getting the latest driver from ati.
[edit]
I presume you got the driver thru the apt-get appilcation - or did you actually go to the ati website and get the drivers there?
That driver might resolve that problem.
