Playing WMV files with MPlayer or Xine
I have just got a AMD 64 P/C and have downloaded the necessary files for MPlayer and Xine (from the Packman website) - including the win32 lib.
DVDs play fine - so do avi, mpeg and mpg files but wmv files won't play. Is it a problem with 64 AMD systems or just for me? System is Suse 9.2. Thanks |
You may need to get newer codecs from the mplayer website or the xine nightly builds page.

Thanks for that.
The codec file I have downloaded and installed is dated the 16/01/2005 but I'll have a go at downloading the version from the Mplayer site. Many thanks. |
Tried again after downloading the latest set of codecs from the MPlayer site. But again no luck in playing wmv files - although DVDs etc play fine.
I then tried un-installing and then re-installing MPlayer, W32, Xine etc again. As a last resort I wiped my h/d and did a complete re-install of Suse but still no joy. Is it time to give up or can anyone think of something else to try. |
Try uninstalling xine and then installing the packages from the nightly builds site I posted above. Also install the win32 codecs from there, they seem to work ook on my Fedora Core system.

Mplayer says to install the codecs in /usr/local/lib/codecs. But the error message I got when trying to play a WMV was that it could not load the codec from /usr/lib/codecs. I made a link /usr/lib/codecs to /usr/local/lib/codes and I'm able to play WMV files.

Other multimedia apps like xine also look for the codecs in /usr/lib/win32, so it was a good idea for you to create that symlink.

This will help you Play WMA and DVD's
First i installed all the " Multimedia Option Packs" the 4 of them
from Online update in yast the I resolved dependencies trying to install libxine1.1.1.0 by removing xine-lib from yast Note: when removing xine-lib it's crucial that you remove the other package called "kaxtv" or something similar, or else you will get unresolved dependencies. this install all the packages you got from http://www.links2linux.de/ or where ever you can get them. xine will then install without problems. you have to change DMA settings to ON or something higher. through yast hardware configuration utility. ( or you will get jumpy DVD playback) this is what I installed libdvdcss2 /to unscramble ecrypted DVD's libdvdread /as the name implies libxine1 libxine-aa libxine-dvb libxine1-xvmc libXvMC speex W32codec-all xine-ui plays DVD's fine. Mplayer requires other packages to be installed, but I prefer xine over mplayer. so this is my answer. |
