Playing / streaming DVDs / Videos using ubuntu 7.10

Hello there. I'm running ubuntu 7.10 and am obviously having trouble playing DVDs. I know I can install a patch for this, any suggestions please? I did enter (from the command line) sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh but this came up with error 77 (??), however this code was for 7.04 and 6.10.
I have also heard that it is possible to install plugins for VLC which enable it to both stream videos and play DVDs? Thanx folks..............

not sure why you are trying to execute a file in docs....try this instead
