It looks as though Xine is getting the nod, here. Ben, I notice you run it on your FC4 box. Did you encounter any difficulties in getting it running, and did you have to install libdvdcss separately, or was it part of the Xine package?

Back on 2 Feb, hand of fate suggested looking at VLC. Their web site, www.videolan.org, looked impressive! I installed VLC as follows:

1. On the download page, I followed the instructions for Fedora Core 4 to get and install the installation public key.
2. Files vlc.repo and vlc-contrib.repo were created in /etc/yum.repos.d, as per supplied text. I substituted "4" for "$releasever", and "i386" for "$basearch".
3. "yum update" then ran.
4. The VideoLAN forums has a thread "Fedora 6 Trouble - Missing Dependency" which indicates there are problems with the next step - "yum install vlc". I did not do the stuff shown in [Part 1] of that thread, I simply went to [Part 2] and "yum instll videolan-client". A lot of dependencies were installed.
5. Applications -> Sound & Video" now lists "VLC media player", and it runs! I can play DVD's, and they look good!

Problem fixed. My thanks to Ben and Hand for their advice and assistance in this matter - well done!. LinuxQuestions forums work...

Regards,
Jon

Totem has 2 flavours : based on Xine or on GStreamer ...

If you build libdvdcss from sources, chances are the rendering engines are not built with support for this library ... So you might have to rebuild your rendering engine (which can be really tricky, because of the amount of deps) or install a package with rendering engine built with support for DVDs ... Not sure these packages are available on Fedora, but I'm sure Ubuntu,SuSE and Debian have them ...

Building from source is a bit more sensitive than using packages ... Dependencies have to be met in the right order at build time ...
