play sound on remote computer through ssh?

hi
following setup:
Im sitting on my bed with my laptop.
my desktop as a few feet away, and I want to listen to music on my desktop. but I don't want to get up and login to gnome or whatever to play some of my mp3. but output of sound should be delivered to desktop speakers, not laptop.

I can ssh to my desktop. then i'd like to execute a command like "kaboodle mysong.mp3" and then start hearing it from my desktop speakers.

(other command than kaboodle is fine, is there a console command to play sound?)

if you has mplayer you can use that. Or you may want to think about using something like MPD, where you can create playists and stuff and play them from a web browser. Its just what you need.

I know this thread is way old, but I just thought I would throw herrie in as an ideal suggestion.

It's a ncurses interface that supports XMMS style keyboard shortcuts, playlists, and it's really efficient. You could ssh into the box and play your music with ease.

1.8.3 doesn't support changing the volume (though the next version to be released will), but you can use screen to open another window to change the volume through the command line.

I use mpg321 for this exact scenario.

check out herrie. I think you would like it better. Also, it supports libao so you can change the sound driver to esd on the fly by using a different conf file and listen to music from your home computer at work. I use the esound mini server port if I am on a Windows box. It works great for me thus far.

open a terminal:

ssh -X <ip of host> -l username

now you are logged in on your desktop through ssh with X tunneling turned on.

now just enter kaboodle, if everything went ok a kaboodle window should pop up, you can now open a file, you will see the file structure of your desktop ;-), you can now play any song from your desktop, through your desktop speaker but with the kaboodle screen on your latop ;-)

Now I have a labtop running Centos
a desktop running Windows XP
i want to play file on laptop, but desktop speakers should sound.

Any takers????
