i386 = Intel Based PC CPU (Any Intel or AMD cpu will use this)
alpha = Alpha based CPU architecture
ia64 = 64 bit based Intel Based CPU
amd64 = 64 bit based AMD CPU
pc98 = not sure on this one, never heard of it.
sparc64 = 64 bit Sparc Platform

So basically, if you have an Intel or AMD cpu that isn't 64 bit, which you probably don't, you'll use the i386. Its basically the cpu architecture when choosing.

i386 is an 'IBM Compatible' (to the average person) and unless you are using an Apple it's probably what you want.

I have to be brutally honest with you, and I hope you don't take it the wrong way. If you're going 'How am I seposed to know' at THIS stage in the game, it will only get worse. If you procede trying to work with Linux with a 'How am I seposed to know' mindset, you will get frustrated VERY quickly with Linux, and I would be very surprised if you get far at all.

Linux requires a lot of either 1) knowledge or 2) learning and especially 3) patience. It's going to expect that you know alot of things that you WON'T know (that's a promise), and will have to learn.

Good luck.
