pkill and pgrep hang and cannot be killed

I discovered today that pkill and pgrep simply hang with no output, and running kill -9 does nothing. I can't think of anything I've done that could cause something like this. If I run the programs with no options, they properly print their usage descriptions and exit.

I'm running Debian testing. pkill and pgrep come from the package procps. I have version 1:3.2.5-1 installed (the latest for testing).
