pkgtool broke

for some reason, while I was in X using a terminal and ran pkgtool as root simulation (ala su, not su -). pkgtool ran properly, but when I went to Remove package and it started to search for packages, after 10 seconds, the tool crashed my pc. I was unable to find anything in the logs that could hint at anything....

any ideas
