Unhappy pilot-xfer no longer able to bind to port

I have been successfully syncing my Sony Clie with pilot-xfer, but am now getting the message
Unable to bind to port: /dev/pilot.
Things that have changed include a kernel (to I'm now using 2.6.21), and tighter firewall rules, but I assume that's irrelevant.
When I plug in the Clie I get
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4 [address varies]
usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
but then can not sync with my usual command of
pilot-xfer -u clie/backupsofclie -p /dev/pilot.
It still syncs on Windows, so I assume it's not the clie.

Any ideas gratefully received

It's up and running again, after
su -c 'modprobe visor'
It's still a mystery, as I didn't have to do that before. Maybe a change in how the kernel is compiled? (I just use default Debian kernels)
