What does this mean, and how can i fix it?
It means that pidgin can't find a route to the authentication server. But since you haven't told us what chat service you're using with pidgin, or anything about your environment, it's hard to help.
If you can get out to the internet from the same machine, then it's probably your user ID/password.
I'm using ubuntu 8.04, Pidgin 2.5.6,using my AIM screenname, I can get to the internet just fine, and i', positive it is not my username/password as i have tried other usernames with the same result. I have a hard time believing that it would be the server for over 2 weeks now...
