pidgin problems
 

I'm using gentoo 2007.0 and I've just emerged pidgin (without any problems) and it won't start... and it seems the executable file is missing. What can I do?

Try opening a console and using a whereis command to see if the the program is there.

When I do a whereis on pidgin, this is what I get: on Slackware 12.0:

bash-3.1$ whereis pidgin
pidgin: /usr/bin/pidgin /usr/lib/pidgin /usr/X11R6/bin/pidgin /usr/bin/X11/pidgin /usr/X11/bin/pidgin /usr/include/pidgin /usr/man/man1/pidgin.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/pidgin.1.gz /usr/X11/man/man1/pidgin.1.gz

Not being familiar with Gentoo, I can't say exactly where the executable should be (in Slack, the executable is /usr/bin/pidgin).

If it's missing, use your package manager to remove and and reinstall it or go to http://www.pidgin.im/ to download a new copy.

Once again, my suggestions are limited by my ignorance of gentoo, but I hope this helps you get headed in the right direction.

This is what I get when I use whereis, and I've allready emerged pidgin again... and I've got the same results... nothing has changed :(

I've never touched Gentoo, but I'll bet you haven't fully installed it.

Well.... I used emerge so it should be fully installed.... but I think the ebuild is broken.

Based on the output of the whereis command, I'd have to say it looks like Pidgin never got installed--it looks like there's just a compressed file in man directory, nothing in /usr/bin or any of the other places something should have turned up.

If everything else seems to working about the install, I'd drop back to reinstalling it, either from a Gentoo package, if possible, or from the source code from the Pidgen website.

I could compile it from the source myself but I'd rather use emerge... so I'll wait for another ebuild...
