pidgin freezes after about 30 seconds

i'm running ubuntu 8.10 and i use pidgin as my IM client

it worked perfectly fine for a few days after initially installing my system, now about 30 seconds after starting pidgin, it freezes, i ran it from the terminal and got

Code:
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Could not open network socket
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Could not open network socket
ERROR: Couldn't attach to DCOP server!
could anyone help me?

it seems that my gmail account connects just fine, but my MSN account it seems to have issues with

EDIT: i deleted my .purple folder and it fixed that problem, HOWEVER
now it crashes with a "Segmentation Fault" which i seached google for and had a little luck
the site i found suggested changin the proxy settings to direct connection, they were already set to that
